The social danger of alcoholism and drug addiction lies in the consequences associated with alcohol and drug consumption, including the consequences for health and quality of life, and the health of future generations. The topic of alcoholism and drug addiction does not leave people indifferent. It is necessary to talk about it in order to protect someone from a rash act, to tell someone where to seek help, to give someone hope for recovery. But how should we talk about it?
What is the responsibility of a journalist or individual for the information they broadcast or post on their own or someone else's page? Should we proceed from the principle of ‘do no harm’ or is it better to remain silent, ‘as if nothing had happened’? Understanding the significance of the media and recognising the importance of informing the public about the consequences of psychoactive substance use, I would like (I cannot do this without your help!) to write several interviews and articles and perhaps organise a photo exhibition. We can find the best solutions when we constantly have interesting conversations, ask lots of good questions, and think about finding solutions to drug addiction problems together!
When I started working on this important issue 25 years ago, I decided to do my job as a journalist in such a way that, on the one hand, I would show that everyone has a chance to return to society and, on the other hand, I would not harm a person's current situation by incorrectly describing their past. It is very important for journalists writing about drug addiction to understand the responsibility of the media in this area. We must do our utmost not to cause harm or play on the audience's ‘interest’ in antisocial behaviour, and not to cause stigma and discrimination against people who find themselves in difficult life situations. The media should pay more attention to such topics.
After all, there is currently not enough comprehensive information about the spread of drug addiction in the official media! It can only be found, and even then with difficulty, in scientific literature. This has a negative impact on the situation; society is not receiving information, which breeds fear. I am grateful for the dedication of those who are involved in this difficult work!
